A crater lake in a caldera at the border between Tanzania and Kenya, and 52 km from Moshi town, Lake Chala is said to be the deepest inland water body in Africa, with a depth of about 3 km.
Itinerary
Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your accommodation, followed by a scenic one-hour drive to Lake Chala. The road can be winding and bumpy, but along the way, you’ll experience authentic Tanzanian life and enjoy beautiful countryside views that make the journey truly rewarding.
Upon arrival, Lake Chala reveals its tranquil beauty. Surrounded by a deep volcanic crater, this hidden gem reaches depths of around 95 meters, making it deeper than the famous Lake Victoria. Fed by underground streams, the lake shifts in colour from deep blue to turquoise and green, creating a mesmerising natural display.
Take a guided walk down the crater rim to the lakeshore, where you can relax by the water’s edge, feel the cool breeze, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
