Itinerary of Robben Island & Table Mountain Tour as follows:

Robben Island – After collection, travel to the iconic V&A Waterfront where you will board the Robben Island Ferry (included) (weather permitting) for your voyage across the bay to the infamous maximum-security prison that once housed various political prisoners including the late Nelson Mandela. From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder of the price paid for freedom. The excursion includes a return ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island and an integrated tour of the prison. After the tour, board the ferry for your return to the mainland.

Bo-Kaap – Upon return to the mainland, enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to discover how the Malay slaves influenced the culture, food and aesthetics of this beautiful city and its people. Formerly known as the Malay Quarter, this picturesque corner of Cape Town well-known for its vast collection of colorful houses and cobble stone streets, became home to the Cape Muslim community and many freed slaves after the abolition of slavery in 1834.

Company Gardens – Proceed to the Company Gardens located in the heart of the central business district. The park and heritage site was originally established in the early 1650s by the European Settlers arriving in the area. The gardens provided fresh fruit and vegetables to the ships seeking replenishment when rounding the Cape on their journey to the East. The Gardens now offer a natural retreat from the bustle of the City. Finish your tour of the Company Gardens with a stop at the South African Museum which houses a variety of important African zoology, paleontology and archaeology collections.

The Castle of Good Hope – Continue your city tour with a stop at the Castle of Good Hope. Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment store, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. The drive through the city will also take you past the Houses of Parliament, the Grand Parade and City Hall; from where Nelson Mandela first addressed South Africans after his release in February 1990. The tour ends with drop off at your hotel.

Table Mountain – Continue to Table Mountain where you shall reach the top by cable car (weather permitting; cable car fee not included). Enjoy the panoramic views over the city with Robben Island lying sleepily in Table Bay. Also, get a bird’s eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard. The tour ends with drop off at your hotel in the early evening.

Activities:

  • Game Drives
  • Mokoro Excursion

Game Drives

Our expert guides are always on hand to share their wealth of wildlife knowledge as you explore the Delta in modified open 4 x 4 vehicles on morning and afternoon game drives. The game viewing opportunities at Sanctuary Chief’s Camp are awe-inspiring. On the plains one may find the roaming lions that prey on the thousands of antelope, zebra and buffalo who live here all year round. There are also healthy populations of wild dog. These extremely rare predators have been hunted to the point of extinction in most areas of Africa and this is one of their last strongholds. There are several local lion prides and leopards, genet cats and hyena are in abundance.

Mokoro Excursions

Mokoros, local dugout canoes, offer a different perspective of the bush in the company of a highly trained local guide. Each June the whole area around the camp floods and turns the Okavango Delta into a labyrinth of lily-filled lagoons and streams where hippos fight for bathing rights and crocodiles wait for unwary antelope to linger too long over a drink. Poling through the byways created by the floodwaters is a magical experience that allows guests to get very close to the biggest of game and to see the world from a totally different angle. As a change from a game drive, the quiet, gentle pace of a mokoro is a real introduction to a way of transport still used in the Delta by the ‘river bushmen’ or BaYei people. (Seasonal Activity)

Overnight: Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge

Unleash your spirit of adventure at Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge.

Evoking the feel of a timeless explorers’ lodge, our sustainably designed oasis immerses you in the untamed wilderness of Botswana’s Savute region. Relax in visually calming spaces, filled with rich textures, earthy colours and furniture crafted by local artisans. Watch elephants, hyenas and leopards drink at the watering hole from our new viewing hide. Relax by the serene pool and enjoy African-inspired treatments in the beautiful Spa tent, or gather round inviting firepits to share stories with new friends. After the afternoon’s game drive, an enchanting Boma dining experience awaits by the campfire.

Activities

  • Game Drive
  • Bird Watching
  • Bushmen Paintings and Baobab Trees
  • The Boma

Game Drives

It’s dark outside as a cup of steaming coffee and a freshly-baked pastry is brought to your tent. The first rays of sun are sneaking over the horizon as you set out with your guide. As the light intensifies, the scent of wild sage perfumes the air.

Early morning and late afternoon game drives take you out and among Africa’s largest populations of elephants. Big cats are on the prowl, from leopards to lions. Depending on the season you will also experience the great migrations such as zebra and antelope. Rare sightings might include the endangered wild dog, rock-climbing klipspringers and the elegant roan antelope.

Equally atmospheric and exciting are evening drives, as the shadows lengthen and the sky turns red. Animals and birds emerge from their siesta, and suddenly the bush is alive with sights and sounds.

Game viewing vehicles sit up to only 6 guests, allowing all on board to enjoy the wildlife from a window seat.

Bird Watching

It is a fascinating time to spot birds at Savute as the intermittent Savute Channel, dry for 30 years, is flowing past the camp again. With it has come a host of new bird species. Dry land birds such as bustards and secretary birds have suddenly been joined by more aquatic varieties. Simply sit out on your terrace and watch the show, especially at dawn and sunset, as they come to splash and drink right in front of your eyes.

Keen birders should also take note of the seasons. At certain times of year you may encounter annual migrations such as flocks of carmine bee-eaters on the move. Some ride on the backs of kori bustards—an amazing sight.

Bushmen Paintings and Baobab Trees

Out in the bush, where rocks rear up among stony hills you will find a collection of paintings that take your breath away. These works by Bushmen are thought to be more than 1,500 years old—beautiful images of elephant, giraffe, sable and eland antelope. Normally these types of painting might be found hidden in caves, but here, unusually, they are out in the wide, open landscape. No-one knows what materials the bushmen used, but the paint is thought to be a mixture of snake venom, blood and plant juices.

After viewing these paintings, continue to the amazing baobab grove—a cathedral-like cluster of 13 giant trees that rival the Bushmen’s paintings in age. Stand among these towering columns at sunset, as the evening light bathes them in a russet glow and wonder at this ancient land.

The Boma

Gather around the campfire in this circular log hut and exchange your day’s adventures, much as local villagers do in similar buildings throughout Botswana. Flames flicker and lamps glow as drinks are served; a choir sings traditional songs and invites you to a buffet of African specialties.

Then take a comfortable seat and listen as camp guides recount tales of the bush. Musicians strike up traditional songs and the evening often ends with everyone on their feet, dancing to rhythms handed down through generations.

Star Gazing

The open skies around Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge make it the perfect place to experience the vast, dark dome of the African night sky. “A jewel box” is how one of our guides describes it, and certainly it is a wealth of riches from the Milky Way to Orion and Venus. Discover how Bushmen used the stars to locate the true south. And, using a powerful telescope, gaze on constellations that visitors from the northern hemisphere may never have seen before, including the Southern Cross.

The Boma

Gather around the campfire in this circular log hut and exchange your day’s adventures, much as local villagers do in similar buildings throughout Botswana. Flames flicker and lamps glow as drinks are served; a choir sings traditional songs and invites you to a buffet of African specialties.

Boma experience (place of eating)

A dining experience second to none in a traditional Boma, best translated as a traditional meeting place, where senior tribe/community members would get together for the “Kgotla” or meeting. Typically traditional food dishes would be served during or after these get-togethers in the Boma.

The Boma had two entrances, one more hidden than the other to ensure the safe passage of tribe elders or the chief should any threat arise. The Boma offers spectacular vistas of the African night skies, through the silhouettes of Camel Thorn trees and Acacia nigrescens, which have been incorporated into the design.

Dining in the Savute Boma will, without a doubt, bring you closer to nature within the heart of a true bush environment.
