Lake Natron

Located on the northern of the Ngorongoro conservation area, Lake Natron is a shallow, alkaline Lake approximately 38 miles long and 15 miles wide. This remote lake is one of East Africa’s largest breeding areas for both lesser and greater flamingoes.

This is a remote wilderness with limited wildlife, a few scattered Maasai settlement, and rugged sand tracks. You may encounter Maasai tribesmen as they tend their herds of cattle, visit the inland cliffs that are home to thousands of Rappel’s vultures.

South of Lake Natron is Ol- Doinyo Lengai, the only active carbonated Volcano in the world and a Holy Mountain for the Maasai. This steep mountain takes about 10 hours to climb and return to its base. The climb starts at midnight, due to the extremely high mid-day temperatures and to allow the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Volcano at night.

Wildlife

This area has few animals like the giraffe, wildebeest, zebra and few antelopes, but the most activity is to watch the flamingoes, however, there is a road to Serengeti and these could be one of the off the bitten-track to Serengeti if you want to avoid the busy road.
