The size of Mikumi national park is 3,230 sq. Km (1,250 sq. miles). This enormous area links with Nyerere national park (formerly selous game reserve) with the forest abundance of the eastern arc Mountains, and so important part of a huge ecosystem of rivers, floodplains, forest and woodland.

The northern plains that surround the Mkata River are readily accessible and is the best place to for wildlife viewing. A good network of tracks means that a wide variety of wildlife including buffaloes, cape hunting dogs, cheetah, elephants, giraffe and lion are approachable and can be enjoyed at close quarters.

Wildlife

Mikumi abounds with big game including buffaloes, elephants, the big cats, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, eland as well as smaller species. Some of the more unusual species such as sable antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and greater kudu inhabit the wooded areas surrounding the Mkata plains and are more of a challenge to find, but they are there.

Getting there

Air. Mikumi national park can be accessible by air and there is an airstrip at kikoboga which connects the park to other destination.

Road. An approximately 4 hours’ drive, (283 Km) on a surface road connect Dar es Salaam and Mikumi.

Its proximity to Dar es Salaam makes Mikumi more accessible and popular option for weekend visitors from the city, or visitors who don’t have extended time for safari itinerary.

When to go.

Mikumi dry season lasts between the months of May to November, but despite wet spell during the remaining months, the country side is green and beautiful, with well-maintained network of roads ensures great game viewing throughout the year.
